It follows Edinburgh based kilt maker, Howie Nicholsby's call to the European Commissioner to copyright the Kilt in a similar way to Feta and Edam Cheese and Champagne from the Champagne region in France.

Mr Nicholsby is frustrated at the many High St retailers selling imitation products which are more of a skirt, manufactured in India and China.

In support of Nicholsby, Scottish Nationalist Party MEP Alyn Smith said: "A real Scottish Kilt is like a designer item these days; I see more and more men wearing them. It's a quality item and a proper one will cost upwards of 150 pounds, These 20 pound things are degrading our National Dress." ..."They look crap and are an embarrassment to our culture and our country"

McFscot owner John McFarland is pleased about the copyright application: "We have always prided ourselves as importers of Traditional Kilts, there are more and more companies in this country who are willing to sell a poor quality product in order to make a buck. Our kilts have never been the cheapest, but they are the genuine item. You can be proud of your heritage when you put a McFscot kilt on."
